|Associate Superintendent for Middle Schools|
William G. Bixby
Associate Superintendent for Middle Schools
William G. Bixby joined the Superintendent’s staff as Associate Superintendent for Middle Schools on July 1, 2013. He comes to the position with 27 years of experience, expertise, and accomplishment as a middle and high school administrator, and as a classroom teacher.
Mr. Bixby gets superior results by empowering students and teachers alike to focus on goals and take responsibility for outcomes.
While leading Bull Run Middle and Gar-Field High Schools, Mr. Bixby implemented best practices to support student needs and build a culture of success. At Bull Run, his implementation of a program to reward positive behavior led to a 25 percent decrease in disciplinary referrals. He took the effort still further at Gar-Field, giving students the opportunity to develop clear behavior expectations. The new student-centered culture that resulted slashed the need for student suspensions by more than half.
Mr. Bixby put learning on center stage at Gar-field. He implemented a standards-based approach that featured formative assessments to give students more timely feedback to track progress toward instructional targets. Teachers were given greater leadership of their professional learning, guiding development of training programs to provide them with the specific skills and strategies needed to meet student needs.
Mr. Bixby’s transformative approach to education earned numerous recognitions for him and his schools, among them: Outstanding Achievement, School of Excellence, and Model School Counseling Program awards at Bull Run Middle School; and Supportive Administrator of the Year and Virginia Outstanding Teacher of American History at Stonewall Jackson High School. Gar-Field students were selected to host the annual Virginia High School League Student Leadership Conference for 2013.
Mr. Bixby joined the School Division in 1988 as a social studies teacher at Stonewall Jackson High School, where he also served as Social Studies Department Chair and International Baccalaureate coordinator. He received his Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Delaware, and earned a graduate degree in American history from the University of Maryland at College Park. He received his administrative endorsement from the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia.
